I am sure that if you are ever reading the news or anything online you see the name Apple Computers all the time. They have pretty much been synonymous with technology and generate billions in revenue annually. Are their high priced computers worth it? I have used one of their newer computers and here’s what I think about it.
A friend of mine recently got the Apple MacBook Air MJVE2LL/A Laptop that’s a 13.3 inch with 128 gigabytes of memory that came out in 2015 so at the point in time this is being written it is the newest version. I was excited because the last time I had to use an Apple computer was a much older version that I did some music production on. This computer is roughly $1,000 or a little less depending on where you buy it, so do the specs make it worth that much?
This laptop has 1.6 GHz in processor speed from a dual core Intel based core i5 that can be boosted to 2.7 GHz using Turbo Boost. There is 4 GB of RAM and there are 128 gigabytes of a PCle style of flash storage. The screen is a 13.3-inch LED-backlit style widescreen with 1440 x 900 resolution. The OS it currently comes with is X Yosemite and you can expect up to 12 hours of life per charge of the battery.
The thing about this computer is that when I used it at my friend’s place I had to check my email and watch a couple of videos. This worked great for that with no slow down really. I didn’t have to really think too hard about what I was doing because it was far more simple to figure out than most other machines I have used.
In looking at the stats, however, I probably wouldn’t spend this much money on this laptop. Sure it has the Apple name attached, but due to the low amount of memory it comes with in the way of RAM, hard drive space, and the rather slow processor speed, it’s probably just best for people surfing the web. I can find a computer with these stats for a quarter of the price or less so you’re pretty much just paying for the big Apple logo and operating system, to be honest.
It is clear why this company dominates the market, and that’s because their computers are seen as a status symbol and aren’t really for those that are into having the best of the best. If you really want to get into building computers or even just buying the most power for the least amount of money, this computer is a silly investment. Sure you can use all of Apple’s services like iTunes, but is it really worth it when you can do everything like this on a PC that costs far less and is more simple to customize?
I have to say that while I like the look of their computers and I also enjoy hearing about them continuing to come out with new products, it’s not for me. This is more or less just an expensive toy that you can show to your friends to impress them. If you have to use a computer for working on more than basic Internet and word processing tasks, this laptop should be avoided.
